Post by John P. Phillips »

Wiz, I’ve got a problen that just came up about a week or so ago. It seems that afterI’ve been online for awhile, I can’t go to another site. I just  get Page can't be displayed.I don’t lose my dial-up connectionI just can’t travel to another site. I can go back to the original site with no problem.     If I reboot, everything is normal again. When I click on let window diagnoseThe problem, I get this message         WindowsNetwork DiagnosticsA required network componantIs not working properly on thisComputerAn installed layered service provider (LSP)Is malfunctioningRemove the malfunctioning ComponentWarning: The application that installedThe component might not work properlyAfter the component is removedI’m running an HP computer with vista home basic.He only thing I’ve installed lately is a new HP printer.Photosmart C4200 series. Could that be the problem? No problems before installing the printer. Is there a solution besides rebooting everyTime it happens or removing the printer ? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks. :cry:

John;
Please download and install/update Spybot Search and Destroy. After it has installed and updated please run a full scan for malware and LSP providers. If NewDotNet or similar is reported as present have Spybot remove it. Reboot and try again.

If you want to bypass the spyware check and rebuild your Winsock LSP, use this DOS command in a Command Window, running as Administrator:

netsh winsock reset catalog

This command resets the Winsock catalog to the default configuration. This can be useful if a malformed or hostile LSP is installed that results in loss of network connectivity. While use of this command can restore network connectivity, it should be used with care because any previously-installed LSPs will need to be re-installed.

Windows Vista has netsh, but with an extended set of commands available. The “netsh winsock reset catalog” command works as expected in Vista, you just need to run it from an elevated command prompt. The easiest to remember is to go to your start menu, type “cmd” into the search field, then right-click the “cmd.exe” icon that appears and select “run as administrator” from the context menu. Press the Enter key after typing the command line.

O.K. Wiz, I took your advice and downloaded SB S&D last nite while I slept. Installed it this morning and after the scan, I had over 30 problems (red). These were things that my other programs let slip by. I used to use SB S&D about 4 years ago but didn't have it on this newer computer. So far, so good. after a few startups, I should be able to tell if there are any more problems. I feel like a real dummy for not thinking about Spybot. Thanks for the advice and for reminding me about Spybot !
