For years I've been happily using Outlook Express to access my Hotmail account, among others. A couple weeks ago I got this from Microsoft -
As a valued customer, we want to provide advanced notice that as of June 30, 2008, Microsoft is disabling the DAV protocol and you will no longer be able to access your Hotmail Inbox via Outlook Express. As an alternative, we recommend that you download Windows Live Mail, a free desktop e-mail client that has the familiarity of Outlook Express and much more.
Anybody have any experience with this? Wiz, if my memory serves, I think you might be in the same boat.
Actually I have been using Windows live mail since approx Sept and it appears to be pretty good. Has all the features of Outlook Express and some of the regular Outlook features. I think I like it better than Express, actually
I switched over to Windows Live Mail the very day I received the notice about the end of support for Outlook Express (April 23). I imported all of my email, folders, rules and address book, without any hitches. My only complaint is that there is no way to hide the list of email accounts in the folders pane, and only display folders, but I have learned to live with it (I have a couple dozen POP3 email accounts). The addition of the junk mail folder is a big plus.
For those who don't yet know about this situation, Microsoft allows certain users to access their Hotmail accounts via Outlook Express, in what's known as POP3 protocol access. They are changing the way Hotmail interacts with POP3 email clients and Outlook Express cannot be upgraded to meet the new requirements, thus it's users will be locked out of their Hotmail accounts, on July 1.
If you use Outlook Express, but not for Hotmail, there is no reason for you to change, unless you simply want to upgrade to a better email client.

I haven't seen it, since I use Outlook 2003, but it sounds like this is the same as the "Windows Mail" that is in Vista, in place of Outlook Express.
I can't access my Hotmail account with Outlook 2003 anymore and Mailwasher Pro has never been able to access Hotmail (I went through a long go around with Mailwasher support and there is no way to do it).

No, it is an improved application over the one that originally shipped in Vista. This one is called Windows Live Mail, not Windows Mail. I suppose it will be updated on all Vista computers as well, with a patch, upgrade notice, or service pack.

Maybe I can help here. I have been using MailWasher Pro from the beginning of the product line and have always been able to access my Hotmail accounts with it. It currently checks two Hotmail accounts every 13 minutes, along with about 22 other POP3 accounts.
Thanks for your input, guys. I got Live Mail installed without too much hassle. I had to run the install from the update site instead of the file I had downloaded; also it said something at the finish about not being able to import something, but didn't specify what. I seem not to have lost any messages or contacts, so...
I don't know that I like it any better than Outlook Express, but it's doing its job and that's the main thing.
One question - can I now remove Outlook Express from the list of Windows components?

Thanks again.

Lou;
For the time being I would simply make Windows Live Mail your default email and newsgroups client and leave Outlook Express alone. If something breaks in WLM you will have OE ready to resume its job.
I have 'Live' on my Vista and no serious problems. I have found one issue I can't explain.
Once in a very great while, I open a 'New' email and I cannot type any message into it. All I have to do is delete the attempt and open a new one. Everyting works well on the second one. But this happens very rarely.
A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
.....
You may have received an e-mail from us letting you know that Microsoft is planning to retire the DAV protocol that Outlook Express uses to access Windows Live Hotmail. In response to customer feedback requesting more time to evaluate alternative solutions, we have decided to postpone retiring DAV and we are investigating other alternatives for accessing Windows Live Hotmail via Outlook Express. This means that if you use Outlook Express to access your Windows Live Hotmail account, you will continue to be able to do so beyond the previously announced June 30 transition deadline. We will be sure to update you once we have additional plans to share and early enough in advance to help ensure a smooth transition in the future.
Who else jumped on the bandwagon and would like to jump off again? OE did the job for me for years until this change was forced on me. Bah!

Wiz, I have been using Windows mail every since I purchased this Vista laptop last year and I have folders only listed. I do not have the email accounts listed in the folders pane. Not sure what is different with your but I have numerous email accounts from various websites and have not had a problem.

Perhaps those email accounts are listed in the Folders Pane because they were all imported from Outlook Express, not created anew.
No, they were all created new. I have never used anything but Windows Mail on this laptop. In fact it doesn't even have Outlook Express on it. Not sure what I may have done to get it like this, but it works for me and I like it.

I was referring to my Live Mail Folders pane. I imported everything from Outlook Express and ended up with an expandable folder representing each of my over 2 dozen email accounts. I can't find any way to hide these folders either. They stand between the Quick View items and my storage folders.

I too was referring to my Live Mail Folders pane. I did not import anything. When I got this laptop I simply created each account for my different emails and my Folders pane, list only the local folders(inbox, outbox, sent items, etc...), not each account.
