Another use for iPod

Post by Cal Sharp »

I've got this big awkward 3-ring notebook full of charts for songs that I don't play often enough to remember the changes to. Well, instead of schlepping the notebook and a music stand around to gigs I scan the charts into iPhoto and sync it with iPod and put that little sucker on the keyhead of my guitar and I'm good to go. This may not be everybody's cup of iTea, but you gotta admit it's pretty dang cool.

Yeah, but the backlight dims awful quickly. Is there a setting you use to keep it lit?

You can set it to "always on" in iPod/Settings. Ideally, if u were going to use this a lot, it would be good to have an iPod dedicated to just charts, and carry it in your seat.

Very clever, Cal, I'd never thought of that!

With an iPod video and the right chord you could project the charts to a TV or screen, I think.

Yeah, but if it's set as "always on" the battery goes down really fast. (at least on my 1st gen nano :P ) so you might want to get an external power source.
If something I wrote can be interpreted two ways, and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, I meant the other one.

Yeah, battery drain is a consideration, but it'll only be on for about 3 minutes at a time. BTW, it's not easy to organize and find files like this on an iPod, but if you create a lot of folders in which to put similar songs it'll be easier to find "Giant Steps" when you need it fast.

Cal, how making making alphabetized playlists of all the band's material? Playlist for every letter, or some group letters, would be a pretty zippy way to navigate, I think.

There are dozens of AC chargers for iPods, I'd do that and set the Backlight timer to always on, I do the same with my Zoom H2 recorder.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking.
