Metadata Monitor Error
Every time I fire up my computer, I get an error saying that Metadata Monitor has encountered an error and needs to close. I close the window, and go about my computing business and everthing is fine.

I have Googled for information and believe that it has something to do with Creative media source (SoundBlaster). Perhaps you need to update your drivers if you are using a SoundBlaster card.

Very well could be. About a month or so ago, I lost sound on my Dell. After reinstalling the Win Xp Media CEnter that came with the DEll, still no sound. I bought a Sound Blaster and installed it. Still no sound. Although, the diagnostics on the Dell restore disc makes sound through the on board sound card. I bought Win XP Pro from Tiger Direct and will be installing it soon. I am still going to try to use the Sound Blaster as I think it is probably a better quality card. Is there anything I have to do in setup to disable the onboard sound other than not installing the Dell drivers for sound??

Yes. Enter the BIOS during a reboot and find the section that lists the on-board audio device and disable it. This will eliminate any conflicts with the add-on audio card.Richard Sinkler wrote:Is there anything I have to do in setup to disable the onboard sound other than not installing the Dell drivers for sound??

On Dell motherboards with the Intel chipset, you must install the Intel chipset drivers BEFORE you can install device drivers such as the sound. If you try to install the sound, on a reinstall, without installing the chipset drivers the sound drivers will not find the sound device. Dell motherboards are custom OEM models (many made by Foxcon), not standard Retail motherboards but they still use the Intel chipsets.
The correct install sequence on models with the Intel chipset is (1) Install Windows (or Vista) (2) install the intel chipset drivers (3) install device drivers (e.g. sound).
On models with AMD CPU's there is still a chipset driver to install.

Thanks guys. I will keep those facts in mind. I know that I did install the chipset drivers first on the first time I had to reinstall Windows (was on the phone with Dell and they walked me through the installation of the drivers I needed). Did have sound after the first time. I can't say for sure about subsequent reinstalls though.
