What's up with 'Thumbs' database files?

Whenever I scan a picture, it gets stored with a 'database file' called 'Thumbs'. I've been deleting those from my folders and haven't noticed that they were important for anything, as far as I could tell. Why does my computer create them automatically, if I don't really need them anyway?
