Roxio vs. Nero on Windows Vista. One user's review.

Post by Wiz Feinberg »

I read this reply in a Yahoo Group that deals with Windows Vista problems, most of which involve software incompatibilities. Since most of us have CD or DVD burners, I think this comment from a person you tried both Roxio 9 and Nero 8 Ultra will be valuable to those who are undecided about which one to buy. This discussion is about the paid, boxed versions of these programs, not the freeware versions that ship with new burners.
I had Roxio 9 suite, which was designed for vista, but i guess it was just designed to be vista compatible. i don't know, but it locked up on my vista computer. As much as I liked roxio because it was so user friendly I had to go to best buy and get the nero 8 ultra which isn't so user friendly but won't lock up on me. while i was there yesterday I saw the roxio suite 10 which, according to the box, was specifically designed for vista. I thought about trying it out but because of my problems with 9 and since I tried a trial of Nero that didn't freeze I stuck with nero since I knew that would work. I wish that other software companies (like roxio) would let you use all the features on a trial version so you can decide if u like it or not. nero let me use all the features in the trial of there software but other companies some features are turned off in trial mode. how do i know if i like it if i can't use everything the software offers? anyway, good luck with your hunt on getting the problem fixed. the only way i got my problem fixed was throwing roxio out the window and going and getting nero. maybe i'll try a newer version of roxio in a year or so.

I wonder how Exact Audio Copy's "Express Burn" works with Vista? I was using Nero 7 Ultra on my XP system and it didn't work well. I did like the look and feel of the program though. I'm using Express Burn but haven't used it long enough to evaluate it. It will only burn CD's with the free version.

Since I do PC support, I have Roxio Easy Media Creator V9 (installed shen I had XP) and the new Nero Ultra V8. The Roxio V9 had some issues on XP and still has those issues plus a couple of more intermittent errors. I've had or worked with every Version of Roxio from V3 to V9 and EVERY version of Roxio had problems of one sort or the other (some major) - Roxio never put out a "bug free" program. I was hoping that when they were purchased by Sonic a couple of years ago that it would get straightened out but V9 was just as problematic as other versions.
I don't have any customers with V10 so I haven't bought and installed that.

The Nero Ultra V8 (with the latest Nero updates) runs good on Vista but they tried to streamline it and make it easier to use and but took a step backward with the Nero "Smartstart". The Smartstart in V7 was much better and it accessed the individual applications. The big knock against Nero is that they do not have a patch facility and when you download an update you are actually downloading the complete suite of programs rather than just the updates.
