Memory Question?

Post by Bill Davis (deceased) »

I have deleted almost everything on my computer except the very basics trying to free up more memory, but the disc shows it is still 99.9 % full. It tells me i don`t even have enough memory to defrag it. My computer is loaded with 1.25 G`s. My computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 and i have a Pioneer external CD/DVD Copy/Burner. Just recently i have burned about four CD`s and DVD`s and they all burned successfully. I was going to burn another one but it says i don`t have enough Memory, space or whatever on my computer. Recycle bin is empty and a lot of other things have been deleted. All this still does not affect the amount of space i have left. Need Help. Thanks. Bill Davis.

Try running Disk Cleanup to delete temporary files and empty the Recycle Bin. You can get to Cleanup by following this path: Start Button > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.

If this still leaves to much data on the hard drive - purchase an external USB drive, say 250 Gb, then move your audio and video files and photos from the C drive to the USB drive. Afterward, you may have enough free space to run the disk defragmenter.

Thanks Wiz for your reply. I already did the disc cleanup bit. Still no different. I do not have any video, audio or photos stored anywhere on my computer that i know of. I have removed everything down to the very basics and it still did not free up not one ounce of memory. How do i get in there to the hard drive and take something out. The c disc is all blue except for about 4% of usable space and showing about 98% full. Full of what i don`t know. Thanks. Bill Davis

You keep using the term "memory" in your problem description, which means RAM capacity, but the tone of the text suggests that you really mean "free space" on your C: (boot) hard drive. Am I correct?

Your situation begs for a hard drive upgrade, using imaging software, or Norton Ghost, to duplicate the entire C drive onto a much larger replacement. Better imaging programs are able to copy only data to the new drive, leaving the empty space formatted and ready for you to fill up with data. Lesser programs will expand the contents of your C drive to fill all the space on the replacement disk, which won't help you at all.

Contact a local computer store to see if they can do this for you. You can buy the new drive from them and pay a fee to have it installed and imaged. Since the C drive is already full Ghost may be your only option for upgrading. Adding a second hard drive and moving the Pagefile from C: to D: may free up a gigabyte of disk space, but you're better off having it ghosted to a larger drive, then defrag that drive after you boot it into Windows.
