Using CD-RW problems

Post by Joe Delaronde »

Using XP, lots of ram, standard PC.

I have been using CD-RW cds to save data files.
When I want to change the data or delete it, I can't.
In the Properties, the file has been changed to Read Only. I cannot change it back to Archives so the file is usable.

I can copy the file to the hard drive and change it, but cannot save it back to replace the original.

Can't figure it out...........can any one?
Thanks in advance.

That is the way it works, when you save to the CD the file is changed to a read only. As you have found out, if you want to use that file, you will have to copy it to the hard drive and then change the read only attribute.

One caution I always tell users, and this is from my experience and from many others, "do not have your only copy of any data on an RW disc". RW discs are known to lose format and/or data. The "packet writing" method is the least reliable CD writing method (e.g. Roxio Drag to Disc/Direct CD, Nero InCD, Sonic DLA).

Although RW discs would appear to be able to be used like a floppy diskette, it's not a good idea.

Any data I save, I use a CD-R. If it's worth saving, it's worth the small cost of a CD-R (which can be as low as 10 cents each if bought in bulk and on sale).

Thank you very much, Jack.
A lesson to be learned. My day's not wasted.

I'll pass on the info to my other friends.
