Will it help with speeding up?

Post by Jimmy Gibson »

Hi there,i have a Windows 98 laptop, that works fine, but the HD is not very big,and it is a bit slow.If i was to use an external HD drive via the usb port could this help with the speed? Thanks.

Depends on where the bottleneck is.

Some things to consider:
Will the new drive run at higher rpms than your present one?
Will you be using USB 1.0 or 2.0?
Is your cpu the problem? If it is, a different HD won't make much difference.

Win 98 will only support USB 1.0 or 1.1.

The internal drive should run faster than a USB connected unit.

Not true, if one considers the available options.

That simply wouldn't be true if the internal drive is a 5,400 rpm drive and the external one is 7,200 rpm or higher
