Mic steel wont record but voice will???

I have plugged in my mic in the mic outlet and recorded my voice talking and it played back with windows media player. But then I put the mic in front of my amp, and played steel, pretty loud and it did not record. I wonder why? Everything checked out volume etc. So I can sing, but cant play the steel, weird....al
