sorry bad post on my part, try these, we can try and figure out what ubuntu thinks your cd drives are named. If now we got some digin to do.

eject /dev/cdrom0

eject /dev/cdrom1

also put a cd in, wait about 5 seconds and in a terminal type

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail
and post the output.

just dopy and paste that, the verticle line is not an i or L but is shift \

If the BIOS doesn't detect your optical disks the OS won't either. Something is wrong with either the drive units, the cables connecting them, or the chipset controlling them.

Check all cables to the drives, on both ends. Loose cables happen.

Try replacing a CD drive with a known-good unit from another machine, or buy a new CD/DVD and install it in place of one that is not detected. Optical drives fail from time to time.

If a new drive is not detected and loose cables were not the problem and the BIOS still doesn't see the drives, the chipset controlling them has died. A motherboard replacement is in order. Or, you could try to find a plug-in PCI IDE Controller (P-ATA) card that will go into an available PCI slot on your motherboard. They are usually available from computer parts stores that have been around for a decade or longer.

Make sure that one drive is jumpered as Master and the other as Slave, or else set both to CS, if on the same dual cable.

I agree. From your screen shot of the BIOS it is clear that the BIOS itself does not detect these drives anymore. Since you believe that the cable and drives themselves are good, although you haven't mentioned if the jumpers are set as I mentioned, all that is left is that the IDE Controller chipset has failed, or is failing intermittently. Check your motherboard for leaking electrolytic capacitors. These are a frequent cause of weird behavior on some motherboards.

Try unhooking the primary slave. My guess is that's the one called sr1 in linux. Of course, tail just prints the bottom of the file so there could be lines about sr0 in there as well.

To reiterate, there's no point spending time in linux on this until your drives are connected and working in a manner where the BIOS detects them. I suspect that once that happens linux won't have a problem mounting CDs automatically and you won't have to do anything further on that end.

It seems you had no problems in the last 3 installs of linux with your opticals until now. Try rebooting with the ubuntu disk in your cd drive and see what happens running with the live cd. If you boot into the live cd your bios sees them. If that happens post FROM THE LIVE CD

Code: Select all

sudo lshw

Code: Select all

sudo fstab

I dont know why your bios isnt seeing opticals all of a sudden

Hey Wiz is there a possibility the problem is with bios and not the electronics? I have heard some bad stories about dells and bios.

well, out of no where, all is working, ..played cd, dvd, copied music, and a dvd..... I did notice, when booting up, sometimes it doesn't see the cd roms... re boot and it does... I haven't tryed booting from the disk, but I do remember now, there was some things while installing it I had to skip, I thinks it said "bad sector"
I have done all the updates... thats where I'm at now

I would power down and re-insert all the connectors to the optical drives and check for a leaky cap like Wiz said, a bios problem has nothing to do with your linux install, its either a hardware problem or a bios problem.

A bad capacitor on the motherboard would explain a lot about the inconsistencies you have been experiencing.

The best mp3 players for linux are the sansa clips. You can set them to act as a memory storage an then you can drag and drop to and from them. The also play ogg in addition to mp3 and wav.

For your printer you have to do
  • 1.

Obtain the model name of your printer.
    2.

Ensure the printer is turned on.
    3.

Choose System → Administration → Printing
    4.

    Click New Printer.
    5.

Your printer should be automatically detected. If so, simply click Forward and then Apply.
    6.

Finally, you can enter in a description and location for your printer.
In the past that printer has not worked with linux. You can get an hp all in one pretty cheap at newegg.com hp is the best choice for printers.

looks like it still doesnt:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1220113

Bad News:
I do believe you have found the combo of equipment that ubuntu hates most.
Good news:

this is rare these days, and if you get your hands on a new computer you will have lots of experience with linux installs and troubleshooting!

I think your sound card ( I have the same one) and your printer are the least linux friendly one out there. Do you still get that bios error? Hopefully it was just loose cables.

Morning,
I pretty much did all what you said about the printer, so a new one might be the answer..I meant the player in the computer...
this computer is just a spare I have, I hate Microsoft!.. so just want something on it to play with, I am a MAC user..I Mac.24 inch screen..))) Love it, I see Dell is shipping new lab tops with Linux on them now, is it a different version than the one I'm trying to learn??? one would think that Dell wouldn't ship these and the buyer have a lot of B S trying to get programs to work...

well it sees the printer...but can't find the right drivers I guess..

My favorite player is vlc. I dont like software that does a bunch of crap for me, I like to control every aspect I can, which is what I love about linux. I think the majority of ubuntu users like amarock and rhtyhmbox.

The dell laptops ship with a version of ubuntu called netbook remix, which is a chopped version. Its basically the same but with smaller screen apps. I think acer and asus are a little more linux friendly laptop wise (cheap on newegg as well). they ship with windows on them, but thats an easy bug to get rid off.

On newer computers now most people just boot and go, not much to do after and install but load all the restricted stuff and configure a few things. People usually buy the preloaded with linux comps because they save a couple hundred not having the windows license.

A lot of these unix based commands will work on mac osx, as it is based on unix as well. A lot of mac users are going to the command line for config stuff.

Just so you know, ubuntu, crunchbang, mint, and a few others are built on a powerhouse distro called debian. Most of the commands we have been using are debian based. Debian is a wonderful os but it can be a bear to configure.

Since your just messing around on that comp, you may want to look at mint.

http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

Mint uses the same commands as ubuntu, but they are not as convoluted. Try and load it so that you have both ubuntu and mint on the same comp. Having multiple operating systems on one computer is one of linux's strong points.

BTW Thank god that wasnt your primary computer. I was starting to panic that I was gonna get you fired or something. :whoa:
