Id keep that first command handy, That will be the one you need if it happens again. Ill look into volume swells and your keyboard.

Sorry your having so many problems with the sound! Its typical to have sound and video problems after a fresh install of any linux, as the card manufactures dont make linux drivers. Usually its a quick fix. Next time you restart your computer I would recommend opening your bios and disabling the intel sound card.

If you have a different keybaord laying around, swap it out and see what the volume does. I think the volume swells are caused by the keyboard not being configured.

Here is a tutorial on setting up your keyboard

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-setup-b ... buntu.html

I recommend not doing this unless you have another keyboard handy, cause if something goes wrong you need a wired keyboard to get the fix set in.

unless you disable your old soundcard in bios after any install you will lose sound as linux tries to use your old built in soundcard first.

all the commands we did for crunchbang will work for ubuntu, as crunchbang is just a stripped down version. However You need to install the medibuntu repository to get your dvds and cds to work. This is because Ubuntu cannot legally provide the restricted packages needed to run the encryptions and riaa crap they put on copy-written multimedia.

to get this running do all this: one line at a time, just copy and paste each line in a terminal and run them.
  1. sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/jaunty.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.listsudo apt-get update
  2. sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install medibuntu-keyring && sudo aptitude update
  3. sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
  4. sudo update-apt-xapian-index
  5. sudo apt-get install vlc mplayer
  6. sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts
  7. sudo updatedb
see if that gets it done

I recommend having at least 2 versions of linux on your hard drive(s). This way if something breaks you can open the other version on reboot and copy things or fix files from there. I have ubuntu 8.10, 9.04, 9.10, crunchband, fedora10 as well as windows xp. They dont take up much room, and you can use one for experiments so you dont bork your main one.

Man your machine hates linux
go ahead and do

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --configure -a
to see if that will finish the install, if not we will remove java and start over.

for the cdrom, you put the cd in first right? if not you have to do that before anything else. If you did put the cd in and got that message then we need to fix the mounting issue.

Please post the output of

Code: Select all

cdrecord -scanbus
and

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -C disk

fstab looks good,

do this

Code: Select all

sudo chmod 777 /media/cdrom
sudo chmod 777 /dev/scd0
sudo updatedb
try again, if that doesnt work try opening a cd with vlc and see what happens. The default ubuntu players are sometimes crappy if not configured better

if that was your password you better change it or edit your post to get rid of it. someone can remotely get in your computer with the username and the password.

after the commands did you try clicking on the cd icon?
I would put a cd in, click on the icon and see what happens.

for vlc,

if vlc is installed it would be in your applications, sound and video

or just type vlc at a terminal.

VIC is a multicast (or unicast) video tool. It is best to start it
using a multicast directory tool, like sdr or multikit. If desired VIC
can be launched from the command line using:

vic <address>/<port>

where <address> is machine name, or a multicast IP address, and <port> is
the connection identifier (an even number between 1024-65536).

try vlc.

open it and hit cntrl d, you should see a drop down list with device names.

also try

Code: Select all

eject /dev/sr0
its cool that you are persevering through this. sorry your initial experiences are rough. This is rare these days.

for some reason it named them incorrectly. Your programs are calling for a different name. It could be as easy as renaming them in fstab, but I want to exhaust all the other options before doing that.

in vlc does that drop down tab have an entry for cdrom0? or is it just cdrom.

try this

Code: Select all

eject cdrom0
