Don't know for absolute certain, but I believe it was Big Jim Murphy.

I believe that was Bobby Tuttle. He'll probably pop on here and tell us for sure.

Bobby Tuttle was the steel player at Gilley's during the movie shoot. He received a Grammy for his work on the sound track. Jody.

Nowadays it's David Kurrasch from Royse City, Texas laying down steel for Johnny on the road. June is a little bit light, but the schedule picks up nicely in July and August.

Yes, that was me. I worked with Johnny Lee in the house band at Gilley's for five years, from 1975 until 1980. The new Super Pro was only a few months old at the time the "Urban Cowboy" was filmed. The late J.B. Van, who was Mickey Gilley's steel player on the road, picked it up in Nashville and brought it back to me so they wouldn't have to ship it. I played that guitar for about twenty years before I got the itch to try something new.

The years have been very kind to my friend Bobby Tuttle and his lovely wife. This guy is a tremendous steel player but more importantly one gentleman. He participates in every benefit around the state, and was a great incentive for several people joining the newly formed West Texas Steel Guitar Association. Super people in the San Angelo area of Texas. Proud to know them.

Great steel playing, Bob, especially on "Cherokee Fiddle". I just love that song that M. Murphy wrote. Great chord progression, almost beckoning out for a steel.

You nailed it well.

Thanks, Bob

I have Known Bobby for over 50 yrs. I was working out of Odessa,Yx. in 1954 and teaching part time at Al Petty' guitar school. Bobby was in an advanced class along with Al Perkins with Al Petty as their teacher. Bobby and Barbara are two of the nicest people on the planet. I got to visit with them recently on the Tony Douglas Show. Sure was a nice visit. Bobby made that Rains Guitar "walk and talk". Jody.

Hey Bob, I may be down your way later this summer playing with Johnny and the Urban Cowboy Band. (I think we're supposed to get a date at the Graham's club there in San Angelo.) It would sure be fun to meet you and exchange stories! I'm sure Johnny would get a kick out of seeing you too. I think it will be sometime in September.

Hey David,
That would be great. Let me know for sure when you're coming. Maybe we can get together. And it would be great to see Johnny again. Tell him I said howdy.

Such a great thread, my son was playing the Johnny Lee songs from Urban Cowboy, he loves that movie as I do as well! On the soundtrack it sounds like Sneaky Pete on steel, I’ll have to pull out the old vinyl to confirm unless someone can confirm. Great old thread again and nice to see so many old forum members posting that have passed on❤️
Regards, Craig

No need. It's Pete, for sure.

Such a great soundtrack. I wore out 2 or 3 cassette tapes of those songs. Those have trashed, but I still listen to some of those tunes on youtube.

Yeah, I miss those guys gone on too.

Some trivia, I guess, Johnny Lee came to one of the jamborees I was playing back in the late 80s or early 90s. We had the song list most of which I already knew. Got to play Cherokee Fiddle as I had learned it at the time of the movie.

Guess who was traveling with him and playing guitar and doing back up vocals? Relatively unknown at the time Wade Hayes. Wade was such a nice guy and fun to play with. I won't comment further on the other players.
