Heard the LliveLloyd "Bars of Steel" on SGR, other day.
Man! Anyone have any light on what the effect(s)used where? Lloyds guitar is really jumpin out. It's like this subtley huge double tone(?). It's not that way on the Tommy vid. I promise not to tell.

I didn't sound like that playing a Sho-Bud. Maybe it's just Lloyd?

I don't have it in front of me but I've got the album and he only used reverb. I think he may have doubletracked one of the tunes but can't remember which one. I think that's the same guitar he played at the ISGC last fall and he had everybody beat on tone IMO. Lloyd doesn't need any effects, he's got his hands and a real tone guitar. I do wish he'd play some of the tunes from that album this fall in St. Louis. I hear he's working on a new album, can't wait.

Lloyd used a Boss RV-3 at the last ISGC.

Well I play a ShoBud too but don´t sound anywhere near like Lloyd... I guess the guy sounds like that on most any guitar he plays. It´s in his hands, and in his mind.

The Lloyd tone you speak of has a formula:

LG right hand + Sho~Bud + yrs of experience + musical taste + sticks to the melody + plays a wound 6th (G#) + plays from heart = LLOYD GREEN SOUND

my $.02

Well then explain why he doesn't sound the same on another brand guitar! If it's all in the hands, then he must sound exactly the same. Yes, I can spell Lloyd very well and I have had him as a close friend for 35 years and I have only heard him sound like that album in mention on the Sho-Bud. It is not all in the hands , If this were the case,we could all play one brand guitar. Jerry, Can you spell E A R S ? ( just picking on you Jerry, You know I love ya buddy.)

Guess I´ll have to add something. It is my theory that when a player already has an exceptional touch and tone, such as Lloyd, certain types of guitars, such as his ShoBud, will emphasize it even more. It obviously works extremely well for his kind of playing, while some others probably might be less suited. I was just trying to say, I believe that no matter what Lloyd plays on, he will always sound like himself.

Would it be safe to say:

What Jerry Byrd is to Rickenbacher; Lloyd Green is to Sho-Bud ??

I heard Lloyd 10 years ago. He was playing a Jimmy Crawford guitar. He sounded exactly like he was playing his ShoBud. Even though I couldn't hold his fingerpicks, I also achieve MY tone regardless of what guitar I'm playing.

Well that ShoBud is not the same as the ShoBuds we know......ah....ha.
It is the first LDG of course; made in '73 and when I was over at his house and playing it; I noticed something right away......I asked....: "Lloyd is this a longer scale than what I know to be on my ShoBud"? He said yep....it's longer than a 24" scale. I thing he said a 24 1/2" can't really remember the exact as I was already numb from just being there.
Also; if you watch Lloyd play the JCH on the video...you notice he is using more vibrato than ever......actually Lloyd "never" used vibrato in all the years you've heard him play.....until he started playing something other than his "ShoBud"......so he was trying to get something out of a guitar that was just not there to begin with....as compared to his ShoBud.....we discussed this quite a bit; and I was amazed at his extream pleasure and perfect fit that he and is ShoBud have.
So yes his style and attack and playing ability will always sound "Lloyd Green"....but there is a match made in Heaven that will always superseed any sound coming from Lloyd and that is "Lloyd Green and his '73 LDG".
