Tom Morrell's Best Yet!
Thanks to Frenchy, I just got my hands on Tom Morrell's most recent offering on CD entitled "Stylin'" -- and it's a killer. Of course there's the same high quality playing you would always expect from Morrell and company, but what makes this CD stand out is the choice of songs -- chestnut after chestnut such as:
Begin the Beguine
It Might As Well Be Spring
The Nearness of You
I Let A Song Go Out Of My Hear
Watch What Happens
And a number of "made up" titles for songs you'll recognize.
BIGGEST MYSTERY: Is the title of the first track -- "PHOOLOCKAH" -- a play on Ed Fulawka's name?
BIGGEST TREAT: A rendition of Steel Guitar Rag with harmonizations you won't believe.
BIGGEST RISK: You'll want to cut off your hands after listening to this.
Frenchy probably still has more if you're interested.

Stephen- I second the motion! Morrell's "Stylin" CD is tops. I enjoy all of his work, but this one is something special . This CD probably ranks at the top of my overall steel guitar music collection. I would encourage everyone to purchase the new CD. Morrell has total command of the instrument and I believe this one truly exhibits the enormous talent of Tom Morrell.

Thanks for the tip on this album. Tommy is one of my favorites for sure ! A local radio station uses his "I Cant give You anything but Love" as a theme song-KFDI with Dougg Collins on the Western Swing program, Saturday morning. I have that recording and it just knocks me out everytime I hear it. I especially love his improvisation-his creativity is amazing !
I will have to buy this CD for sure. Thanks again for the post !

well, I sure appreciate you guys for adding your thoughts. As far as I'm concerned, nobdy touches Morrell on a cold night in the rain. By the way, if you haven't heard it, his previous CD -- Jugglin'Cats -- is also fantastic. It features four different female vocalists (I assume they are the cats what am being juggled) and a great list of songs. For me, the highlight on this CD is "It Happened in Monterey" and a wild version of "Slow Boat to China".
By the way, Tom plays a lot more Dobro on Jugglin' Cats than on his other CDs, so if you're looking for some great Dobro playing, this is the CD.
Again, thanks go to Frenchy for the tip.

Can't wait to hear this one.
And Stephen, you and I have the same favorites from "Jugglin' Cats": Becky Kilgore's singing is sooo wonderful. Her "Slow Boat to China" is just sooo seductive. And "Monterey" is fabulous too.

Here's an interesting tidbit from the cd liner notes:
"When we recorded our previous album (Jugglin' Cats), at the end of each session we would do several instrumentals. Consequently, when "Jugglin' Cats" was finished, we had our next instrumental album 75% complete." -- Tom Morrell
That's a helluva two-fer!
By the way, Phoolockah is not a play on Ed Fulawka's name, it's a mispronounciation of "Foot Locker". Want to know more? Buy the CD.
[This message was edited by Stephen O'Brien on 01 February 2002 at 05:28 AM.]
