Walrus Audio Canvas Volume Pedal vs Telonics

Post by John Larson »

I was browsing some sites looking for synthesizer gear and came across this.
https://www.perfectcircuit.com/walrus-c ... pedal.html
Canvas Volume Pedal Features
Analog signal path, digital control
8 Different taper modes
Customizable minimum volume
Up to +9dB of additional gain
Lag control for up to 2 seconds of control delay enables smooth and loose repsonse when desired
Mono in/mono out, stereo in/stereo out, and mono in/dual mono out options for flexible set-up
The description made me think. Possible budget alternative to the Telonics multi taper?

Looks like Walrus has a little pedal steel demo in the product video

Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright. Give praise to the Lord with the harp, chant unto Him with the ten-stringed psaltery. Sing unto Him a new song, chant well unto Him with jubilation. For the word of the Lord is true, and all His works are in faithfulness. The Lord loveth mercy and judgement; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

Hmmmmm, this is interesting indeed.... about half the cost of the Telonics...

with that said, I own 2 Telonics VPs, and could be happier with them.... but I will be watching this thread.

Seems like a really nice pedal for the money. The low profile is something I like. The programmable doesn't do much for me>. I would set it up like a normal pot pedal, Goodrich taper, pedal off is off, unity gain, fast response and leave it. So for me the main advantage is form factor and price.

The guy in the video says it operates on a contact less position sensor. Possibly like the Hilton pedal with the infrared technology like a TV remote?

I have had it for three weeks now and have used it on two gigs and at home. When I ordered it, they accidentally canceled my order, and as a result, I got it at a discount. Lucky day.

Compared to the Telonics, it's both shorter and lower profile. I had to add nonslip furniture pads on the bottom and on the top heel to make it comfortable for me. I don't think taller people will have this problem.

It feels as solidly built as the Telonics, the action is as smooth, and the pedal drag is adjustable.

Electronically, the sound, to my ears, is identical to the Hilton or the Telonics. I tried the Lehle volume pedal, and it was all treble, so I returned it. I think I'll keep this pedal.

It uses a standard 9 V power supply, which cannot be part of a Daisy chain. It powered up from a 5V phone battery pack, but tech support says the headroom will be compromised. The female power-supply socket is on the front of the pedal and has not been a problem. The input and output sockets are on the side, but in a different order than most volume pedals. I sealed the openings, so I don't get them confused in a dark setting.

The output is very adjustable, like the Telonics.

I use the Hilton taper on both. The minimum on adjustment I have set is not zero, but a very small amount of bleed. Working the controls is a little bit finicky, but it's easy once you know the buttons and their response. I do not use the lag adjustment. I have the gain set to unity.

I have a few gigs upcoming, and I'll let you know if there are any snags. But right now I'm happy with their product.

Thanks for posting the info, Jon! Mine will be here tomorrow and I'm hoping it was a wise investment to compete with the Telonics I've used for years. It was suppose to be the last pedal I'd ever purchase and certainly the best I've had in all these years. BUT! New gear is always tempting.

Dave 🙂
