Teach Your Children

Just happened to come across Kathy Mattea, Alison Krauss and Suzy Boggus doing a rendition of Teach Your Children at the White House in 1995. Had never seen this before and I wish someone could post it as they did such a beautiful job on it. Steel was excellent and I believe it was Steve Fishell on that Sho-Bud. It's a shame he wasn't right up in front as he played such an integral part to that tune.

always liked their version, and liked the steel work by Apostle Paul,, but Jerry's work on the original is still the standard... I always thought that Paul COULD have played it the same way Jerry did, but chose not to.. kept it close enough to make it recognizable, but made it his own, and thats often the way it should be done . I used to watch him on Marty's show, and he always looked like he was having an absolute blast in that band! bob

I think the steel playing on the Ryman version (the one with Steve playing) was pretty much spot-on to Jerry's original steel work - except that the steel was a bit too far up in mix, IMHO. But the studio version was much more identical, vocally, to the original.

I think that once a steeler reaches a top level of playing, it's very hard to emulate the sound and style of a beginner. (Not a slam to Jerry's talent, as he admitted in an interview that it would take him a "whole 'nother lifetime" to become proficient on steel.)
