This belongs in Steel Players, I'm moving. It is also not a good idea to post the same exact request in multiple sections.

Lots of great players named here who play great music. But a definition from the OP of “contemporary” would be useful.
The best “modern jazz” playing I have have heard is by Maurice Anderson on the hard to find Johnny Case compilation “Jazz Potpourri/Contrasts in Jazz.” It is post bop modal jazz music (the kind that’s hard to hum, at least for me
) and each tune is typically 6-8 minutes. It was recorded in the early 1970’s, but “modern” compared to the swing/bebop based stuff most of us typically migrate to and consider “jazz”. And I’m not taking anything away from my heroes; some of them are my friends; that have been mentioned above.

I'm in agreement with bOb on his list on this post. I'll add Doug Jernigan knows and plays as much or more on the C6th as anyone that I ever heard. He is a Steel Guitar Giant! He will play chords and songs on the C Side that will blow anyone's mind. He played a Gospel Steel Guitar Show that I hosted in 2015 and was incredible. I'm honored to call him my Friend!

He's not playing pedals, but I'd add Mike Neer as a modern C6th player. He's making quite a splash in the contemporary jazz world.

There's a younger player in my area named Tobin Hess who is an excellent C6 player. I first saw him playing Banjo when he was around 9 years old and soon after that he started playing Lap steel and then eventually got a D10. He took to the C6 tuning like a fish takes to water and loves playing Jazz. He's in college now, or possibly finishing up a degree and, IMHO, has a very promising musical career ahead of him, if he so chooses to go that route.
