lloyd green with colter wall

Post by Dave Campbell »

i've been checking out a young canadian singer named colter wall. seems like lloyd green contributed some really unique steel sounds to what are pretty sparse arrangements. i can't think of another steel player that would take his approach on these tunes.

by the way, robby turner plays some great stuff on colter's previous album.

I wondered if anyone on the forum was aware of this and had wondered who the previous album’s steel player was. What GREAT albums! I’ve listened to “Songs of the Plains” over and over for about the last 4-5 months. Great songwriting, picking, incredibly unique voice and of course great steel playing by Lloyd Green. Reminds me just a bit of Gunfighter ballads by Marty Robbins as far as the theme of the album

most of his live shows seem to be solo, but recently i've read he's performing with a full band, including pedal steel.

there's a fine looking film of his performance at the national cowboy poetry gathering with patrick lyons on steel; unfortunately the steel audio track seems to be missing from the video. the youtube description states that the video will be replaced with a higher quality video somewhere down the line, so maybe that'll get fixed. here it is anyhow:

Loyd Green with Colter Wall

Post by Bobby D. Jones »

When you have just drums, Bass and Rhythm guitar whoever plays the lead has an empty canvas to do what they want and Loyd done a great job of painting the song. The other song with the harmonica is great too.
As you add lead instruments to a band the picture changes as the song gets busy and no space to take an instrument and musician to its capability.
