Wow Al would be a much more polished player just a few short years down the road.. Knew of this band , but only heard it for the first time today.. Pretty primitive country rock by the standards that would be set very shortly thereafter, but still cool... bob

I know he was using a ZB by by the time he was with Stills and Manasses.. Before that he was with the Flying Burrito Brothers for a short time and he was using a Fender.. That was just after shiloh, so I would imagine he was using the Fender with shiloh... Not 100% certain ... bob

I remember this album - it got some airplay on underground/college stations in Boston and someone I knew at Antioch had a copy. I don't think it was distributed very widely. You can listen to the whole album here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rGU44TWNrQ

I think it's as good as pretty much any country/rock around at the time, lots of good stuff on there. More steel on It's About Time, a bunch of fuzzed and/or Leslie'd out steel on Swamp River Country, and Du Raison is a nice steel-centric instrumental. I read an interview with Al Perkins where he said the first thing he played on with the ZB was Exile On Main St. – he had just gotten it when he did the session. I'm sure you could look up the dates the album was recorded to find out when he switched from the fender.

yep, Exile was recorded early 1972.. He was using his Fender on anything he recorded before that I image..
Funny, to my ears there was not that much of difference in the sound of the steel itself from this album to his work with Manasses.. the playing itself became more refined, but the tone was similar.. At least to me... bob
