MYST - "Riven" & Windows 7

Post by Chip Fossa »

Just getting back now from Maine. My buddy handed me this 5-CD block set of MYST (Riven), as we were departing. Told me that this is, yet, another great ENIGMATA.

I know about MYST. I have the very 1st one.

I like the games; they're tough, however.

For me, with W7, Myst/Riven, is a blow-out. Does Not Work!!!
The initial-start CD told me QT was out of date. (QUICKTIME)
So I bellied up, regretfully, and QT'ed up.

To NO FU%%$#@# avail.

W7 - HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This never happened in the past, when PC's were stupider...............I"m pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What really gets me? Is NOBODY has a REAL Fu**&^&^%^& answer!

On the WEB, anyway..............

Thank you, Jon...

This whole Myst/W7 [and Quicktime, too] mess just seems like a huge hassle.

But, I'm still gonna try to get it to go.

OK,

I got Riven to work.

It had to do with Quicktime.

I wound up uninstalling my previous version of QT.

Then I tried to install Riven from the .exe file on the CD. I changed compatability mode to W95 and checked off "allow administrator".

I let Riven install QT [a QT .exe file is right there on the CD items]. But I had to use the "advanced" option for QT.

I'm thinking, now, I may not even have had to switch 'compatability mode', as I've been reading about other W7 users who claim to have had no problem with Riven just using W7 as it is.

It did freeze-up, though. This is also a common complaint I've been reading about. But it played for a good twenty minutes before the freeze.

That game is over 10 years old. It was developed when I was working at Broderbund. I'd be very surprised if it runs on today's computers. I mean, I guess it's possible, but things have changed quite a bit in the operating systems over the past decade.

Windows 95 was a whole different architecture under the hood, compared to Windows 7. And Broderbund has been out of business since 1998. (Only the brand name remains - there's no company called Broderbund anymore.)

Hi b0b,

I just quit playing Riven, now, as it indeed froze again; and so I checked my mail.

It plays like a champ. Video/audio is as good as I remember MYST. I got Reso set to High Color [16 bit], instead of True Colr [32 bit]. Doesn't make sense to me, but seems to have reduced some 'blockiness'. Except for the freezing, it's OK.

So I'm stuck on CD#2. I tried #3, but got a flag saying insert #2 [Once on that island, you're stuck].

So is there anyway to keep Riven from freezing?
Otherwise, I can't move anymore. It's like, getting it to install was all for naught anyway.

It's no big deal, but heck I got the game, so why not?
