Public hanging for Bill Gates.

Post by Matt Dawson »

Call me a namby-pamby liberal if you will, but I have always opposed the death penalty. My position has now changed. Id like to see Bill Gates hung drawn and quartered in public.

After months of deliberation I recently bought a fairly expensive laptop running Windows Vista. Windows Mail(the relacement for Outlook Express) didnt work properly so I took it back to the shop. They informed me that the problem Im having is supposed to be that way. It is in fact a feature! I would NEVER have bought a computer running Vista had I known. I wasted £600 and there must be many just like me. Hundreds of thousands of ripped off people because of blatent stupidity.

It seems that the feature that automatically completes email addresses when composing an email does not check the addresses in the contact list but only checks against a list of the last 29 email addresses you used (even if these are people you never intend to email again). This means that if you regularly email more than 29 people the auto complete feature is USELESS. Writing an email now takes forever and is a pain in the rear.

Conversation between 2 engineers at Microsoft;

Engineer 1:
Hey, people seem pretty happy with Outlook Express, shall we leave it as it is?

Engineer 2,
No, lets make it so it DOESNT use the address book when you compose an email. That way if you want to send an email to 30 people in your address book it will take a REALLY long time.

Engineer 1:
Cool! Shall we allow people go back to Outlook Express if they preferred it?

Engineer 2:
Nah! WE DECIDE WHAT PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED. WE ARE GODS!

This arrogant cavalier attitude to other peoples money is UNFORGIVABLE. I really hate Gates. Some incompetant twat at Microsoft signed this off. Incidently in case anyone admires Gates for his charitable works, as a percentage of earnings, even I give more to charity, and Im well known as a stingy tightwad.

Can't you just get rid of Vista and install windows XP on your computer?

Theoretically possible but can introduce all sorts of problems mosly with recognising wireless devices. I could have done a clean install before I used the computer, but I stupidly assumed Vista would be better than XP. It would be a total pain to do so now (and I would have to buy a new copy of XP). I shouldnt have to do this though. How hard would it have been for MS to let people choose for themselves whether they want Outlook Xpress or Windows mail? Why have auto complete if it doesnt link to the contact list? Why assume that people only ever email 29 people regularly? Why not 129? Why fix something that aint broke anyway? I would not recomend Vista to anyone.
Cheers

I haven't used Outlook in years, and don't use the Windows Mail on my new Vista PC.

The solution - Mozilla Thunderbird

I have NO problems with Vista. ALL the programs I had on Windows XP run in the native Vista mode. I do have some problems with Roxio Easy Media Creator 9, but I had problems with it under XP and is typical of every version of Roxio. I use Outlook 2003 (part of MS Office 2003)rather than the Windows Mail program.

That was a very long rant for just one problem (if it really is a problem - first complaint I've heard about it and I do a lot of PC support locally and on the Dell users forum).

The biggest "complaint" I hear/see is the same complaints users had when they went to Windows 95, and when Windows ME came out and then when Windows XP came out. I expect to hear the same complaints when "Windows 7" (next version of Windows) comes out.

Glad to hear you've come around to the reasoned position.
Writing an email now takes forever and is a pain in the rear.
Why? Either you're leaving out something important, or "takes forever" is a gross overstatement.

Clicking on either the "To:" or "cc:" gets you a list of all your contacts where you can quickly find the ones you want and add them. What's the problem? And, BTW, don't forget you can uncheck the box beside "Automatically complete email addresses when composing" under "Tools/Options/Send" if that makes life easier.

I'm no Bill Gates apologist, but WinMail seems fine to me.

I had a small problem with ms outlook officeXP version with my new vista laptop. OfficeXP version of outlook will not remember my email password. I researched the problem on the net and found that i must upgrade to the latest version of office if i want outlook to remember my email pw. I refuse to upgrade when all the other apps still fill my needs. I just uninstalled outlook and now use windows mail with no problems.

I forgot the first rule of internet etiquette. Dont post or email until you have calmed down. I have now calmed down. Thanks for the replies.

I have never used Outlook or the new one. For me, it's Eudora. That mail client has proven itself to be very stable, reliable and bug-free.

I don't use WinMail either. I use Mozilla Thunderbird.

But the question was about WinMail.

Hey wait ! Don't talk death penalty yet. I just read in the paper that Microsoft/Gates has made an offer to buy Yahoo. Give him a chance to mess that up then look for alternative punishments !

In defense of my profession, I must point out that software engineers are rarely permitted to make decisions about how a program should work. Those decisions are usually made by marketing people, under vague orders from business executives. See Dilbert for further knowledge about how this system works.
