Transferring PROGRAMS to a new computer
I read somewhere that there is now software available that will transfer most, if not all, of your programs to a new computer, not just transfer your files. But I lost the reference. Does anyone know what program it is and whether it's any good?
Thanks,
JC

With XP you can only transfer user data, not programs. With the Vista transfer wizard (and appropriate cable) you can transfer many programs from an XP machine to a Vista machine.
There are commercial programs from transferring such as the Intelli mover that comes with a special USB transfer cable. That one seems to have problems and will tend to move things that should not be moved. I tried to use it when I went from an old ME machine to a new XP machine and after I specified what to move it still moved more including my Recycle Bin and messed up the new PC and it had to be restored to the original power up condition. I've seen "horror stories" on the Dell forum of problems with those mover type programs.

Al;
You cannot move the program by copying files to another disk. All you will accomplish is the consumption of disk space. To actually "move" a program to another computer you must either install it from a setup disk or file, or use a program that analyzes your installed programs to find all of the parts and parcels that make the work, including Registry entries and system files, then accumulate all of those items into a new setup file for use on the new location.
This is very hit and miss.

Wiz and Jack-Thanks for the info.
It sounds and looks like they are still trying to make it too complicated for us
Here is another one, I plug a mike into the mike input in the front, set up my recording program, and talk and it comes out my spealkers ok, so I hit Record and talk a bit, and play back, and no talk, it didnt take. Anyone know wat I missed or should be checking. Is the soud card corrupt.? It plays my Biab and other songs, and plays and records tapes on the line in, ok. I tried the Mike in the back too, still wont do it....???al.

Dave and Jack-Thanks for yourhelp. I found it was that D...Realtek that came with the computer, that I dont like . I had to set their settings to Mic , although my recorder says Line in/ Mic only one optionm and that where I set it. Volums were all set correctly otherwise.
Anyway , after I set the Realtek, which I don't voluntarily use, my voice recorded and played back on Window Media Player. But I put the Mic in front of my Amp and played my Steel loud, and it still didn't pick it up.??????
Not only that but when I record, it says another Mixer is running and tells me to pick the one I want, and there is none listed for me but Realtek, so I dont know what the other one is....Weird again...al

Program Migration - Please read this Wiz
Jim
I'm getting a new PC this week and my OS will go from XP(SP2) to Vista Home Premium. I, like many, have programs for which I don't have the install disc. Ran across an outfit at www.laplink.com which purports to have a program which will migrate not only files, etc., but programs as well. I'm certainly far from being a "wiz" like the real Wiz so I wonder if he could give us some input since we both apparently have the same need.
Wiz has, through his knowledge and guidance, commanded my respect so I would hope that he could bail us out on this one.
Thanks for the read. Richard

Jack Stoner and Vista "Easy Transfer"
Jim -
I've found Jack Stoner's inputs to this section of the forum to be very informative and useful. He mentions Vista "Easy Transfer" as a means of accomplishing our goal of transferring programs as well as files to a new machine. I searched and found a description of "Easy Transfer" at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928635 and I find no mention of program transfer. Help! Jack! We're back at square one - I think.

Here's the link to the Vista "Easy Transfer Companion" that will transfer SOME programs from an XP machine to a Vista machine.

Not all programs can be transferred.
Here is the KB article and list if what can be transferred.

Re: Program Migration - Please read this Wiz
As Jack explained; Windows Vista has a built in utility for "moving" programs it knows about from an XP computer to the Vista computer. It cannot move other programs that are not in it's database.Richard Damron wrote:Jim

Laplink PCMover looks like the same program I used to use, which was part of PowerQuest's Partition Magic, which is now owned by Symantec. It read the Windows Registry, and program install/uninstall configuration and ini files and determined how to relocate any program from that computer to a file, which could be imported onto another computer, after installing the same pc mover program onto it.
I looked at their features list and read the details and it looks like LapLink does exactly what the old PowerQuest program did. It moves programs between computers, over a cable they supply in the box. It also move files and settings, so your desktop, email accounts, icons should all be transferred if you select them in the transfer options.
This is all based on the features I read on the Laplink web page. I haven't tried it (except for the old PowerQuest mover I used to use, quite successfully).
Here are the meager system and hardware requirements for PCMover:
* Windows 95/98/NT/Me/2000/Media Center/XP/Vista
* Not compatible with Windows 64-bit Operating Systems
* Intel or compatible 486DX or higher processor
* 16 MB RAM
* 20 MB of hard disk space
Connectivity Options
* Laplink USB 2.0 Cable
* Laplink USB 1.1 Silver Cable
* Laplink USB 1.1 Gold Cable
* Laplink Parallel Cable
* Network connection (LAN or WLAN)
* Removable Media (CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW)
* Windows Easy Transfer Cable for Vista (Laplink, Belkin, Vivanco)

Moving Programs
Wiz - Thanks loads for the response. Looks like Jim Cohen and myself now have a couple of options due to the efforts of yourself and Jack Stoner. Joining the Forum was the best $5 I've ever spent. I've gotten a hundred fold in return.
Many thanks again - Richard

I found my old Partition Magic CD and the program I was trying to remember is called "Magic Mover," by Powerquest. As I mentioned in my earlier post, Symantec bought them out and has folded Partition Magic into their own products. From everything I have read on the LapLink PCMover pages, it does the same and more than that old program. I'm surprised there isn't more talk about this program (well now there is; here).
If any of you guys get/have Laplink PCMover and use it to transfer files and settings, please let us know how well it does what you want it to do.
