Fastest Picker ???

I drove a 427 'Vette for a while, it was the fastest thing I ever sat in, but then along came this 427 Cobra...Somewhere out there in la la land ( not LA) there may be another Big E, but until then I would stay in the grandaddy club..Speed is relative, just like my own relatives, sometimes I can't leave fast enough to get out of their company !

Well at the Choo Choo Jam on Friday afternoon...Herby,Doug,Hal,John,and Jr. were lined up....playing Incredibly fast,taking thier licks...one after another ..and not missing a beat...I've also seen some of those star pickers ..with the likes of Paul,Loydd, Tommy,Merick,Stu, and Johnny Cox...Who's to say....the "Buddy's" are no sloches..and Jimmy Day was like greased lightnin'..JD...The incredible Jimmy Crawford.....and the list goes on...All of these GREAT Pickers are also VERY "Tastefull"
and down right great guys.... IMHO

After many years of listening, I've never heard Buddy Emmons rush or sound like he is hurrying. No matter how fast he plays it always sounds relaxed and easy.

Good point Kenny. Even when he may not be in complete control, Buddy always sounds like he is.

Another subtle point I like about Buddy's playing are the pauses he takes. Instead of rattling off 15 gazillion notes in a row, he plays phrases with pauses, as if taking a breath. The listener unconsciously breathes along with his music, and feels pleasure, not out of breath. (Hope that makes sense)

A fantastic example of tone and taste would also ne Terry Bethel!!!! What a technition. What finness. Terry does a rendition he has created of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" that will knock your socks off!

Well, certainly, everyone named on this thread is a great picker. I think that when people get as good as these mentioned, as well as others not mentioned yet, personallity and friendship enters into our choices. There is no way to determine who is "the fastest". "Jooyun" Tharpe was a good friend of mine and I have a healthy respect for his playing! He was very quick and made it look so d.... easy. He laughed and smiled all the time. regards,fred
