This is getting a bit heavy, but let me say that this:
I like your tone, Marty.
is something we've never read here before or in the Off-Topic Board.

HA! Ron... Image

Jody, I thought we understood each other; I just fence with those who want to fence. Those who don't, I leave alone. Nothing wrong with that.

And Michael, I can't imagine what I did in this thread to deserve all that bile you're spewing (unless you're making ME pay for YOUR inferiority complex). Surely there are people reading this thread who are thinking to themselves, 'if anybody's starting $#%^ and needs to get bumped, it's Holland'.

And b0b, I've never listened to it quite like that but you've got a point...

I have not had the chance to hear the clip yet. Actually, I am too afraid to hear it because Marty has said on more than one occasion that when he is "on" that he is a "10" on a scale of 1 to 10. Furthermore, he thinks Paul Franklin licks are real easy and that I would not be worthy to carry his (Marty's) case.

Given all that, I am too afraid that once I hear the clip that I might get so discouraged that I might give up playing steel altogether...HELP!

Marty,
I thought that it was great..Very original..All steel dosn't have to be 2step..or county-country..and I happen to like C6th...I'm still an old steeler in the learning process. I learn something new every day!..I'm STILL working on the damned blocking..and getting full chords and getting these tired old fingers to move at least 1/2 a mile per hour. I like all kinds of music...so I thought that you're little piece was refreshing......We all can't be John,Lloyd,Hal,Herby,Buddy,Buddy,JD,Jimmy.Paul,Jr,Weldon,Tom...or whoever. So as Ricky said before he burned and crashed..."You Can't Please Everyone,So You've Got To Please Yourself"!!!!!!!So Just keep Pickin' and being irritating!!!

Haven't heard the clip.

I've read some of Marty's rants. I've read his harsh criticisms. I've read his responses to counter-attacks. I've seen him deliver some low blows. He plays the "devil's advocate," he works to rile you up, and you fall for it. If you don't like what he says, do yourselves a great big favor and don't read his posts. See? Simple. Maybe too simple.

Thing I find ironic, is when he puts his music out there for people to hear, they criticize the person, not the music. Maybe he deserves it, but for all you who spout so much crap about character, you're not even listening to yourselves. Some of you even wanna kick him out. Makes all your talk about grace and character seem so contrived. You've blown a perfect opportunity to rise above the B.S. and stand tall. Good for you.

You guys need to try to understand, this guy isn't serious 99% of the time, he is putting everyone on, he is a very good player that deserves our support and friendship. He has laid his life on the line for his country, and your "freedom to say what you want", and do what you want. Don't take him so seriously, he's not hurting anyone at all with his sharp tounge or fingers at the computer. This is an interesting "Don Rickels" "Henny Youngman" type of guy. We should enjoy his humor and his playing, He is great at both. I'm seeing everyone picking on him (possibly also in humor), I just hope no ones feelings get hurt in the process. Be nice everyone. Don't act like me! Look how famous he is now, I don't know anyone that doesn't know him, and he'll probibly be in the "Hall of Fame" before Maurice , or ME!! (so will Billy Gillman, for that matter)

I agree with Bobbe and Chris; no matter what you think of Marty this was a "review and critique my playing" post and ranting on about Marty personally or his past posts is no better than the accusations.

Marty and I got into it early on and since then we've swapped a few emails and gotten over it, even so I'm not sure I could say I really understand him or that anyone does, but I'll tell you this, the guy ain't dumb, far from it in fact. He does like to "poke the bear with a sharp stick" and see what happens, who knows why; we may not agree on whether or not that's really a very good thing to enjoy but at least let's not attack him or anyone else if they aren't attacking us first. I know I've ruffled a few feathers here too in the past a time or two, with some less-than totally polite posts, actually I'm sorry about those but I'd like to state here and now I have no grudges or ill will towards anyone on the Forum....can't we forget our past disagreements and move on? If I can do it, so can anyone if they want to. What is there to be gained by holding a grudge and perpetuating hostility?

Marty, your clip is interesting, to me it does have kindof a new-age sound, I don't see anything wrong with that. I like everything from Jerry Byrd and Don Helms to the most modern styles, as long as it's played well. I'd say your playing on the clip is good, not great on the level of LG or E or other legends, but good, and I suspect you'd rate it similarly. Considering as you said it was a first take and you didn't even know which change was coming up, we should probably consider it excellent. I also know you can actually play better than this clip shows. I'm thinking, now that we've heard from quite a few Forumites what they think of your clip, tell us now how you'd rate it yourself? I'd be interested in knowing.
[This message was edited by Jim Phelps on 03 October 2002 at 04:11 PM.]

See Jim C., I got a 'nice', you only got an 'acceptable'. Image

Thanks for the comments about my playing (both good and... ummm... interesting). Image

And Michael, is this the quote to which you're referring:
No air-copulation during prayer meetin'!
?
If so then, MAN, you need a humor enhancement operation, BIG TIME, dude!!! I'll bet that cob hurts! Image

So; my take?
I hear it somewhat like b0b does; a series of 'licks' strung together in what I feel to be an unique and interesting fashion (granted, b0b didn't say unique OR interesting). I do take exception to b0b's characterization regarding a 'country licks machine' or however he said it. Cripes, I can't even IMAGINE sounding LESS country! The one thing that stood out most when I retrieved it from the cutting room floor was the syncopation. That's always been a strong suit for me and I find it extremely aurally stimulating. I would love this tune even if I hadn't done it.

I don't really want to touch too much on the quality of the recording itself because there are just too many glitches to cover; over-strong sub-bass, poor mix, loud hiss, etc.

I think b0b, hesitating to designate it 'music', is extremely tunnel-visioned on his part but I can't help but feel that his critique might have been different if he had not known the players identity.

In fairness though, I've been a sideman for SO many years now that my playing is bound to betray my origins. I do have quite a bit of chameleon in my chops, though; I tend to do what I hear other around me doing. And I mimic the other players. This would just be one example of the different kinds of styles that I pursue. On a diff beat with a diff motif, you'd hear a completely diff riff.

If only the player weren't such an A-hole! Image
[This message was edited by Marty Pollard on 03 October 2002 at 05:41 PM.]

Actually, Marty

When I listen to it, I can imagine Paul F. doing some *very* soulful playing, by *not* playing, and weaving in and out of the rhythm. Also, the way Paul jumps around with intervals in this style is amazing, Check the Dire Straits stuff.

Hey Bobbe, a whole lot of us laid our lives on the line---no telling how many war hero/veteran Forum members there are, and if I may say so, thank God for ALL of us.
Now, as for the rest of you, it's true, Marty has already submitted his character for review, in the form of his inflammatory postings. And we've all "reviewed" his character, by responding in like manner.
But this time, it was about his music, and STILL his character comes under attack?? Not too gentlemanly, huh? It was a bunch of strung-together licks, as Marty himself said, and ws a first-take improvisation. So give Marty a break(on this one), and stick to his music.

Ok... I fess up. I liked it a little. There, is everybody happy now?

(drumroll, plaintive..soulful banjo (??) slowly picking out the "Battle Hymn Of The Republic".....lights fade down as announcer begins his voice over) And so it goes in the life of all around nice guy Marty Pollard, the story you have heard is true... some of the names are changed to protect the innocent...or not. Image

( I honestly have enjoyed Martys wit since the old days. I can't say that we always agree, but that doesn't change the fact that I have found his comments to be mostly insightful and intelligent.... which is far more than i can say about mine Image He is a talented musician who used to have a whole web page with a bunch of clips of his playing. I'm pretty sure he can shuffle just fine Image I am putting this comment here because, I'm not sure, but while I was just having fun, a couple of folks may have thought I was serious. Nah! Not me.
God Bless,

This is turning into a great thread.
Jim Phelps, you say he likes to "poke the bear with a sharp stick and see what happens". I think this was a great and funny comment that I'll never forget. I think you and I have done that too Jim! Marty, I think you have won a big publicity battle here. I just have to wonder if this is a complete plan of yours that is slowly coming together.
Yep, you might be a pretty smart cookie.
I know Lloyd has heard your clip and I'm waiting for his take on all this. It should be quite philosophical. He really has a brilliant mind and I enjoy his outlook on life, people, players, music, music business etc.
This forum is a wonderful place to meet great people and lifetime friends.I have met many. Your attitude and personality depends on which you meet. Lifetime friends or lifetime foes. I'm sure Iv'e made both however, with the lifetime friends Iv'e met here, the possible foes don't seem that important. If I tried to name all the friends I have met here, I'd fill bOb's hard drive.Jim Phelps, you are one of many that started out as a big forum argument, now you are a great buddy. Think about it guys, haven't you met some great friends here? Be careful, Marty may be one in the future.

Steve G., I didn't exactly lay my life on the line, but I laid it down right beside it once. (I think someone moved the line)
When I was in the Air Force, I shot down three Viet Cong Mig-21 fighters, I didn't get credit for it though because it was in 1983 and the war had been over for 10 years.

Hey boys, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. The difference with those of us who are rattling Marty's cage is that we are doing it without vulgarity or profanity--BIG DIFFERENCE!

If I were to approach it like Marty does, then I would make some comment about Lloyd's leg, but I won't. Image

Jody, I always enjoy your stories, but please, be a man and cut the "I'm OK, you're OK" crap. We've had too much of the sensitive male garbage promoted in our society.

Bobbe, ol' pal, you somehow seem desperate for allies on this Forum these days. Image

BTW, simply quoting what one has written is not examining that one's character. It is simply putting those past words to the test or preparing them for consumption.

Character is what you really are when you think no one is watching.

That being the case, I'm sure you'll be the first to admit that there's really no way for you to judge my character. I can say that I take care of the unfortunate, that I give money to the needy (needier than I, I should say Image), that I tithe, that I perform services for the elderly, that I'm polite to strangers and respectful to my elders, but you can't know those things, Frank. On this board, I've never attacked an INNOCENT bystander and that's ALL THERE IS TO IT!

Everytime you see someone with an axe to grind (with me) it's because they dulled that same axe trying to do battle w/me.

Ego or plain humble truth?
You decide...
