Seals and Crofts "Boy Down The Road" Red Rhoades.

Paul Franklin at the Station Inn with Mandy Barnett "If You've Got Leavin On Your Mind".

Sonny Garrish = Studio songs, great doubling interesting parts.

Tommy White at the Earnest Tubb Record Store on Music Valley Drive with Justin Tubb and others. Great fast picking and playing. Long before the ET Theater, in the back of the ET store or the little add on building.

I think my favorite album is, "Steel Guitars of the Grand Ole Opry". The songs that stand out are "Sundown" and "Killing Me Softly".

For me, it's tough to decide which is my absolute favorite. Right at the top of my list though would be "Greensleeves" by Buddy Emmons from the Black Album. The playing, tone, touch, arrangement, the other musicians support... that recording is just hauntingly beautiful and awesome to me. That whole album ranks at the top for me as an all-time favorite.

For a recording with steel guitar backing up a singer, Lloyd Green on Kenny Price's cut of "Charlotte Fever" (RCA 1971) is one of my all time favorites. I'm pretty sure Lloyd told me he cut that with his Sho-Bud, Baldwin D-10 through Harold Bradley's Twin Reverb w/ two 12" JBLs at the RCA Studio. Awesome playing and a great job by Kenny too... an awesome, great vocalist as far I'm concerned.

I agree with Roger Rettig regarding Buddy's, Christmas album also.

Whew this is a tough one! Almost impossible to narrow it down. Great topic.

Here's a few that come to mind. On a different day perhaps I would have a different answer. So much good stuff out there. I am going to check out everyone else's picks!

Buddy Emmons' version of Rose City Chimes.
-I love the tune and it shows off a few styles in one tune.

Buddy Emmons - Here's That Rainy Day.

Buddy Emmons - Flint Hill Special.
-I love hearing the bluegrass banjo licks on the steel.

Sol Hoopii - 12th Rag (electric version).
This one really surprised me when I heard it. I thought this song was annoying until I heard Sol's version. His chord solo on the last chorus sure sounds like a blueprint for Western swing.

There are lots of them. Doug Jernagan's Streets of Larado and My Funny Valentine on his record More Ways To Play. Everything Curly Chalker ever played. Julian Thorpe's version of On A Clear Day has always been one of my favorites. If I had to pick only one though, it would be the Buddy Emmons song Blue Jade from the Black Album.

OK, I will say it. (seems almost taboo at steel shows). The second song I learned to play when I obtained a Supro lap steel in 1955 was “Steel Guitar Rag”. (My first was “I Overlooked an Orchid”). SGR is truly a steel guitar instrumental and I find it to be one of my most requested songs. It is the steel players equivalent to the fiddle players Orange Blossom Special. I have not heard it done better IMO that Buddy Charlton and Leon Rhodes did it with the Troubadours. There are a lot of beautiful steel solos in vocal songs that I think are great but they are not actually steel guitar songs.

Haven't posted in awhile, but this is an interesting question. I would say that Buddy Emmons playing of Canon in D is among my top favorites. Tom Brumley on Together Again, and Neosho Waltz, and the solo on I Sang Dixie. Too many others to mention. All of the past and present players have offered version of great songs, and it is hard to list the best of all time. Also, Leon's playing of Faded Love from the many Bob Wills catalog of songs is also on the top of the list.

My favourite piece? I think it's 'Shenandoah'.

My hat is off to the remarkably talented Gary Carter who included his version on his CD.

I recall Buddy's remarks at one point; he said that he still hadn't quite found a way to play the song to his own satisfaction (or words to that effect). We now know (and we're blessed to be able to refer to it) that he performed 'Shenandoah' at a steel show later in his life and absolutely nailed it, modulating after each verse.

I like that version best just because it IS Buddy - but Gary's take on the song is also close to perfect.
