Played three piece for many years. The last group was: topnotch rhythm man, good all round drummer and myself on steel All three of us sang so took the load of off everyone.

One of my most memorable nights of listening was about 20 years ago in Austin. I was there on my day job and saw in the alternative newspaper that Justin Trevino was playing in a small club. When I got to the club, it was just Justin on bass, Karen Biller on drums, and Jim Loessberg. Jim had come directly from his softball game and was still in uniform. He had taken off his cleats though.

I’m playing tomorrow night with acoustic guitar, bass and steel. I’ve played a couple of times with just acoustic and steel. I think the bass will be a huge asset. I can do without drums but I sure like having the bass.

I know it's all relative, but the drummer I'm working with is quite musical. He asks questions, for one thing.

Weird, I know.

If I can’t play with a good bass player and drummer, I usually stay home. It’s painful. I know a lot of really good rhythm guitarists. I still need the bass and drums.

My dad was a very good rhythm guitar player and fiddler, backing me for hours every Sunday afternoon when I was a kid learning. He could swing like Joey MacKenzie with the Quebe Sisters. Bass and drums just fill it in and make me comfortable.

YMMV

As an ex- bass player I'm very unsettled if the bass and drums don't knit together right. Fortunately the guys I'm working with do seem to be able to listen and play at the same time. I wouldn't mind betting they can also walk and chew gum.

My band leader asked me to try something different -
I use an octave pedal to drop the signal an octave and run that through an eq into a bass amp. The dry signal goes to a fender combo. I play simple bass lines on the steel and then fill in as much as I can. It's been working pretty well, no jinx!

Years ago when I was playing a T-8 Stringmaster, I put bass strings on the lower 4 strings on one of the necks and filled in on bass. :D

Cowboy Jack Clement used to say “where I come from, if the drummer is playing to a click, he’s dragging...”

A drummer who needs, or thinks he needs a click track has neither the sense of rhythm nor the awareness of tempo to be let loose on musicians :x

A long time ago I played in a 3 piece band. Bass, Drums, and Steel. It was after hours. Monday thru Friday 11pm to 5am, Saturday 10pm to 6 am, Sunday was 10pm to 4am. After about a year and a half, I had to find something else. If it had not been for Eddie Long coming and sitting in, I don't think I would have made it that long. That was sure some dues paying.
When I got to Florida and played a duo with a very talented guy with a auto drummer and then another talented guy that could program drums, bass, and keyboard, along with a harmony unit programed in. Those were easy.

We already have the camel as proof that God has a sense of humour. We don't need the banjo

A Scottish friend of mine told me that the bagpipe is the missing link between noise and music. :whoa:

Steel is not a rhythm instrument; I tell people that when they want me to do a 3-piece. Doesn't sound full, unless you have full PA support. This way, I just play guitar & get out of schlepping my D-10 around.
A couple D-10s,some vintage guitars & amps, & lotsa junk in the gig bag.

Me, Corky Owen's and his brother played some of the biggest dance halls in Texas with a 3 piece band. I played bass and sang, Corky played the steel and his brother played the drums. No guitar players in the band. No one ever noticed anything was missing. Nothing but compliment's. It was even a cleaner sound without a need to be seen lead guitar player trashing it out. Corky was working overtime on steel however. Lol!

Off-topic, maybe, but I just got involved in a five-piece - vocal/acoustic, electric, bass and drums plus me.

So I can sit with my hands in my lap more than I play. Bliss! Better that taking on the world single-handed! :)
