thanks Rickey Last time I saw Jim was at Billy Bobs here in ft worth. A very funny story back then. As you know he was a great guy' TracyRicky Davis wrote:Yes Tracy I knew you were talking about Big Jim Murphy....I was asking WHAT Hank you were talking about? But now I know and NO I never knew big Jim played with Hank 3rd..and so I never heard any stories from him.
Yes I did take care of Big JIm's STeels....he had 5 different pedal steels and several non-pedal steels...the last 5 or so years of his life when he lived here in Austin. Here's me playing one of them and here's another one I restored for him and here's big jim playing his last pedal steel made for him from Terry Bethal>

Music hath the charm to soothe a savage beast, but I'd try a 10mm first.

you're fine. with you or checked. nationally or internationally, i've never had the slightest problem w/ any of that stuff, and i fly with all sorts of weird combinations of instruments, usually at least two guitars. did a festival gig in France last year, walked the steel onto the plane for all the flights, put it in the overhead. no checked bags. don't give it a second thought.
on the rare off chance that someone gives you a hard time about it, charm em. i had to do that w/ the pedal steel on the first connecting flight to France. eye contact, big smile, the it's-no-problem-i-do-this-all-the time vibe (I'd never flown w/ that case before), "my beautiful queen" type stuff. she lets me walk onto the plane w/ the steel in the hard case - i get in, and the (female) singer is looking at me, just grinning shaking her head
