The JFJO, as they call themselves, have this weird thing working where every album is totally different; they're apparently doing soundtrack work now - for comic books!(?) Steely fellow, Chris Combs, with his li'l 6-string, write a lot of their stuff.

What all this does is point out one of the groovier aspects of the beast - every one of them sound very DIFFERENT from each other, and from what has come before. Try and play a six-string in such a way as to be different? There are a half-dozen people being different in the exact same way.

Then there's resonator guitarist, Rob Ickes. I suggest checking out his 2002 album, What It Is. Rob Ickes on resonator guitar; Paul Hanson on saxophones and bassoon; John R. Burr on piano and Hammond B3 organ; Derek Jones on bass and Kenrick Freeman on drums.

I love to listen to all of the players mentioned. Doug Jernigan and Buck Reid from the current players in particular. Hal Rugg was no slouch when it came to playing jazz, and so too with Paul Franklin and Tommy White. Some of the players mentioned are more western swing based than jazzers, but great nevertheless. For me, Emmons, Chalker and Anderson are the top three out and out players of jazz music on steel.
