I Like Retirement.
At nearly “72” I certainly don’t have the energy or stamina I had in my younger days, but I try to do at least one small project a day. There’s plenty to keep up with on my 2acre spread, mowing, cutting wood, changing oil in our vehicles, working on guitars, building speaker cabs, or setting around in the AC and staying cool. Playing music on most weekends is still fun, gives me some pocket money, and fellowship with the guys and gals I get to pick with. I have definitely slowed down even more since my pacemaker was installed in May. As for sleep, I usually stay up till 2:00 or 3:00AM every night, and get up at 8or9:00AM, sometimes nap a little during the day, sometimes not. Got out in the shop last week and put a filler pipe on my Jeep Wrangler gas tank in 100* heat. Wore me out, took two days to recover, but I made it alright. I’m not as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was. Just get tired quicker.

70 this month, good grief, who ever would have believed that little Tony Prior would ever be 70 ? My wife reminded me that on my bi- monthly gig, two players are older than me . Both are still very active as well. I'm an early riser, good energy and ambition thru most of the day, then the ambition and desire take a back seat to execution. It's not a rut, it's a routine.
I am very involved in an activity outside of music which requires time and attention each day, it's good, it's fun. It's important. It's also very social.
A good musician friend just retired, he called and asked me what I do each day as he is kinda lost. I just replied, your daily activities will seek an appropriate level, do something that you like to do, participate in something that requires your attention. Don't just sit around playing Bass and waiting for the phone to ring, that ain't gonna happen. You can only watch so much Wheel Of Fortune. I told him that his music should be "in addition to" what he does each day. Just like working 40 hours/week.
Retirement is a wonderful thing, a blessing. Even with some chronic health issues we can do many things and spread our time across music, Steel Guitars and other activities/hobbies that we enjoy.
I may complain that I'm busy but I would rather complain that I am busy than try to find something to do each day.
