Pete certainly got around. Aside from the high profile and well known sessions he's played on, here are a few lesser known tracks.

The Holy Modal Rounders from their late '60s album on the Metromedia label, Good Taste is Timeless
"Once a Year"

and the ethereal sounding "Love is the Closest Thing"

On Harvey Mandel's 1968 album on Phillips, Cristo Redentor Pete's pedal steel stylings weave perfectly with Harvey's unique guitar style:
"Bradley's Barn"

"Nashville 1 AM"

Yes, in the early 70's he owned "Pete Drake Productions", producing and recording new artists. He must have played on thousands of records.

Here's a cool video from about 1964. Pete's instrumental "Forever" reached #25 on the pop charts. I remember hearing this on the radio when I was a kid. -----> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_R9an8AU3No

Cool, Doug,

'Seems to me that I'd read somewhere that Buddy claimed to have had that idea and Pete picked up on it. Maybe someone on the Forum may be able to 'facts-check' that. Anyway, just a little diversion from Pete. Here is the Big E playing a talk box through his PSG on the Cherokee Cowboys' 1965 album Western Strings with a song titled "Burnt Fingers", Wade Ray sings the lyrics:

Now back to this great Pete Drake thread. :)

The talking steel guitar was invented by a very alarming-looking fellow named Stringy.

Thanks, Earnest! Looks like Alvino was playing a Harlen Brothers Multichord. :)

Yeah, Alvino Rey was first with the talking guitar, 1939, 20 years before Pete Drake. But he used different technology. His wife was offstage wearing a "throat mic". She would mouth the words as Alvino played. What a team!

Way! I never realized there was pedal steel on that album. Now that you call it out, it's obvious. Very cool. Pete Drake rocks! Thanks for posting.

Was "Lay Lady Lay" the first use of pedal steel with a Leslie?

Pete sang a pretty good straight country song too. Here he is singing on Color of the Blues:

Maybe not so important, but he changed the key of the original which is A, to B- flat.

My all time favorite Pete Drake instrumental, Midnight in Amarillo:

Not sure about all the piano players but I have heard that Dean Manuel played on a lot of the Starday cuts as well as Pig. Dean was an awesome talent and they did a great job of capturing the piano sound on these old recordings.

Probably my favorite talking steel guitar song - Pete Drake, of course! It doesn't hurt that it's a Roger Miller ballad.... 8)
