Because, previously up above, you said I should try an image restore.

BTW - I downloaded CCleaner and ran a scan. It showed roughly as many bug-aboos as Error did; especially in the registry.

Then, all of a sudden, all my media players went silent (I never acted on those scans). But YouTube would play.

So I did a system restore back to [3/13].

And now, all is fine audio-wise. I got rid of both Error and CC.

You know, I really do appreciate everyone's input here. But many times, there seems to be too many ways to go about resolving an issue. And if you're a half-dummy as I am, it gets overwhelming.

That's why I'm going a step at a time. I want to consider and respect everyone's opinions on how to wrap this up.

Thanks again, Mitch. :)

Chip;
You mentioned that after you took ownership of the 5 branches of the Registry, that many sub-branches did not show your logged in Administrator level account as owner. That tells me that you failed to check the checkbox to apply the changes to all sub-containers and objects. Do that and all items under the 5 branches should be assigned to the desired account.

Note, there are some things that are owned by the "System" account. You may need to log into Safe Mode's "Administrator" account to take ownership away from System.

Here is some info on SP1 from the latest Windows 7 newsletter:

Follow-up: Windows 7 SP 1

Last week, we took a look at Service Pack 1 for Windows 7, and as usual, results were very mixed. Some of our readers experienced flawless installations while others had a myriad of problems. Some were just unable to install the service pack, and a few reported "bricked" machines (these seem to be mostly Dells, especially those running 64 bit Windows, and a fix from the Dell Support forums was posted in our forum). A few readers reported that their desktop icons disappeared after the installation of the service pack. And some reported problems with applications (for example, Jon M. said Outlook keeps crashing after the SP1 installation).

I got email from several readers who said that they were unsuccessful at installing SP 1 until they wiped the disk and installed Windows 7 without the "crapware" programs that are installed by the computer manufacturers, and then SP1 installed with no problem.

The following advice came from Jim B.: "If you use Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) be sure to have them installed before installing SP1. RSAT for Windows 7 SP1 will not be available until April and there are many reports of people not being able to install the current RSAT on an SP1 machine."

If you're having problems getting SP1 to install, check out the forums on TechNet. Here is one thread that deals with Error C000009A:

Wiz, I wouldn't know how to take permissions away from
SYSTEM right now, or in Safe Mode.

In Permissions/Advanced Subkeys are already listed and so there is no checking-off.

A lot of pages within Permissions have grayed out things.

In OWNER, on all five main categories, Amnstrs (Foghorn7\Admnstrs) is listed as the Current Owner.

All sectors of Permissions, in one way or another, seem to contradict each other.

In Effective Permissions sector, I clicked on 'How are EPs determined?' I started to read and gave up. A college 101 class in basic physics would have been more comprehensible.

Also, the last link Jack offered up - many folks on those blogs had similar issues. Some were able to finally get SP1 installed, after much wrangling, but only to find that a lot of their programs didn't work right, at all, or disappeared.

I get more and more confused the more and more I read up on this issue. Believe me, there a lot of folks out there POed at MS. Really, in this day, how can a company like that, be so lame? And it's there own software. They created it.

You have hit it on the nail Chip: They hire educated idiots to write the code for service packs.

Cut your losses and decline the service pack until they fix it. There is nothing new to be gained from it anyway.

Get your PC working as it should be. Then burn an image and save it in case something like this happens again. Increase your System Restore size to save more days.

Move on

And you too, Wiz, have hit the nail on the head.

That's exactly what I planned to do.

Forget installing SP1 for now. It's just too much. I've already spent more time on this than I probably should have. It sure took the fun out of PCing.

I'm gonna just do my regular backing-up and imaging, and create a few more restore points over the next week or so, and wait till they [MS] see how many folks they've miffed and fix this mess.

Thanks for the final time Wiz, and all others here for your time and help.

Please lock this baby up. :) :? :) :\ :D
