Wiz, I uninstalled Roxio.. now Nero works.. but upon a restart, things slowed down again.. for example IE8 will sit on the screen for a long time, then says IE can not display this page.. If I have Nero on screen then try to X it out, won't go then I bring up a different item on screen, & finally nero goes away. but a portion of it stays on the screen..I ran mbam again, & it showed 3 malwares & removed them..
I don't think the tech did anything with a registry fix, he only ran Advanced system care, & that's how he removed items from the start menu.. then he ran mbam a couple of times, & a cleaner in Advanced System Care..
I really don't want to format my computer, because I am wintering in Texas till April, & most of my programs are at home in Canada.
Is there anything you can recommend to clean it even further... e.g. registry..?

John:
Go to the start menu. Type in msconfig in the search box and let it load. Go to the startup tab and tell us what items have a checkmark next to the name.
Go to task manager. Open it up and go to the processes tab. Poke the CPU column so that the highest CPU usage is at the top of the list. Take a screenshot of that and post it if you know how.
If you don't know how to post a screenshot, then write down the items that are using say at least 5% of CPU and post their names here.
How much memory does your PC have?

John:
Yeah, leave Skype on if you need to. Do you know for a FACT that if it unchecked, you would not be made aware of an incoming call? If so, leave it checked.
If you can't ID all those other things that were checked, they likely don't need to be checked. They should run as necessary when you need them.
Go back to that processes tab and make sure you have "show processes from all users" checked in in the lower left.
My PC normally shows system idle at 99% unless I am doing something at that specific instant.
Here is mine:

What numbers do you show for processes, CPU usage, and physical memory at the bottom of the window?

When your PC is bogging down, what numbers do you show for CPU usage and physical memory at the bottom of the window?
Do you know for a FACT that if Skype is unchecked, you would not be made aware of an incoming call?
You may also have extraneous services running?
It is in your best interest to learn how to post a screenshot to these forums.

I like to work with pictures, & make slide shows & put them onto DVD's, I like Nero for copying , etc.
But their Nerovision to me is not user friendly, don't much care for their transitions between pictures, & I like the slideshow bmaking better in Roxio, nice transitions, & very user friendly, 236 different transitions..

I'm glad you got everything running smoothly, John.
But in a practical sense malware infections aren't a problem with Macs, no. It's not like that's the only difference between the computers but on that front I consider them to be a lot better.
To be fair, MS does have free anti-virus and free anti-spyware you can download. I don't think they ship it with Windows but neither do they ship all of the Windows Live apps, like Live Mail.ebb wrote:thanks. so those mac commercials are right
