Hey Scott I'm another bowhunter -- have been for 35 years or so -- if I'm not playing steel, I usually have a new Hoyt in my hands somewhere !! In fact I've got as much archery gear laying around as I have steel stuff!.. Down here in NZ we can hunt 365 days of the year so If I am playing out of town, I quite often have my bowcase in the truck as well.

Computer science, math, control systems, music, and vintage guitars/amps have been, at various times, professions and passions. But I'm also into classic movies, philosophy and history of science, shooting and hunting/fishing, golf, baseball, running/hiking, cooking, and being a political junkie / rabble-rouser. But sometimes (not often enough) I just chill out with a cold beer.

My family takes up most of my time (when I'm not working), but work is almost a hobby in a way, as it's very unusual. I've been in paint/coatings all my life, but am now an officer in a company that both markets and installs polyurea coatings - thick, waterproof stuff that dries literally seconds (www.waterproofingcontractor.com). We did Dodger Stadium, the new sub ride at Disney, University of Arizona Stadium, LA County Museum of Art, Universal studios (NOT the part that burned down!) and are doing all the BART car floors in San Francisco. We even manufacture and sell robotics systems for coating the inside of pipe. I literally work at least part of 7-days-a-week it's so unusual and fun.

I still find time to surf...not the web, the water. My daughter works in a surf shop and is a surf instructor, she and my nephew (same age - 17) are both big-wave riders and my 13 year old is a monster with no fear in up to double-overheads...it's the Hawaiaan blood in us!

I coached girls' fastpitch softball for years (the surf instructor was a phenom of a pitcher; a full season no-hitter when she was 13, and we have shelves full of District and tournament championship trophies) and little league baseball; our son still plays but I think this will be his last season. I'll miss it, but the field is literally next door to our house so I may volunteer some of my time.

The boys - our oldest is 26 and a certified recording engineer - all play guitar, so that will always keep me busy! We could open a decent music store with all the inventory around this house!! I used to have a side business as a guitar/amp tech but only do it for select customers now. Not enough time.

I used to shoot IHMSA metallic silhouette a long time ago, and I'm considering getting into IDPA competition. I also like going a few rounds on the Playstation 2 with Splinter Cell, SOCOM, and other FPS games.

Hi Lewis,
They are all A10's, including the rigid frame (1951).
The rigid is fun to ride and handles well (until you hit a bump). It has the "soft" 334 cam (designed for hauling the family in a sidecar). More grunt than an Afghan brothel!

Have you got pics of your bikes?

Interesting hobbies. I also like four wheel drives (I have a Suzuiki Samarai) and radio control airplanes, and motorcycles, however I had to trim my hobbies down. I don't have time to do them all, so I chose steel guitar (my favorite) and deer hunting next to playing my steel etc. I prefer bow hunting over gun hunting, and usually let the younger small ones walk, and concentrate on the older trophy bucks. Any other bow hunters out there in the Tennessee area?

Top fiddle player David Varnado has moved from Nashville, to Texas, and is now looking for a new country artist to play with. He is now playing for Neal McCoy, however Neal is cutting back on his concerts. David has played for several top artist, such as Loretta Lynn, Johnny Paycheck, Chris Ledoux, etc. and has done recording, and played the "Grand Ole Opry" over 100 times over the years, and prefers to work with a Texas artist, as he now lives in Texas, however he will consider any offers. He also plays rhythym guitar and mandolin. He is in his early 30's and has been playing professionally since he was 12, and enjoys traveling. If interested, or if you know someone looking for a great fiddle player, call Scott Kamp at 409-626-2761, or send me an email at, gsvnkamp@yahoo.com or call David at 409-344-1821.

Just thought that I'd bring this back around. I collect old wrist watches and pocket watches. I have about 12 at this time, so I don't have that many. Other than music, this is all that I do, but music is number 1!

Aide from Steel and the other instruments I play, I collect vinyl records. I have over 2000 at this point, I always like to tell people I have something you'll love, and something you'll hate in the collection.

Like a lot of you, I did the hunting, shooting, fishing and motorcycle (had two old Nortons that my friends from the UK would remember) thing quite a few years ago. Played six string a lot until a few years ago, when our piano player and bass player retired (they are married). Then I started sailing and racing sailboats at the NJ shore. Not the NJ shore areas that most folks know best, but the North side that faces New York harbor. (I even sailed an 80 foot sailboat in New York Harbor.)

Amen to that! As a beginner of 6 months trying to learn this beast, I’m pretty much booked after family/kids, job, and some church commitments…

Double amen to that, Roger! (Not that I get much of a chance to play nowadays…see above comments.)

Dave, you’re killing me, man….there must be two or three of you in there!?

Hey Mike
I also got into R/C planes in the mid 60's with the reed radio's. I got into heli's in the 90's but don't fly much of anything in the last 2 years. Still have a Kyosho Caliber 5 with 50 size motor still in the box. I scratched built most of my planes and besides sailplanes, I only have a Super Kaos left that I built. It has an Italian Super Tigre on it and it is fast and smooth.
I got into dirt oval racing a few years back (1/10, 1/8, and 1/18th cars. Tons of stuff for these but I don't do that much now either. Young guys are hard to beat now.
I bought a BIAB harddrive a while back and that is taking all my time. Not much practicing on the steel. I use a lap steel when I am recording anything now.
If you might be interested in any of my stuff, I can email you my phone # and we can talk. I bought some of your CD's a couple years ago and they were very good.
I am looking for a Dobro if anyone is intersted in talking with doing some trading or selling.

Besides playing Steel Guitar, one hobby of mine has been Target~shooting and Reloading with various Handguns. My other business/hobby is Leather Work. I did all the Custom Leather projects for a local gun shop for about 20-yrs., although I've been doing similar crafting for the past 60-yrs.! I mostly construct Custom-Made Cartridge~Belts and Holsters. My Web~Page below has a Link to a sample of my Leather Work!
